Elena Alshanskaya

Director of the charitable foundation “Volunteers to support orphans”. Graduated from St. Petersburg State University, where she majored in philosophy. In 2005 she formed a social movement to raise awareness about children who had been abandoned by their parents or taken away from their families. In 2007, with the help of volunteers, she managed to get the Moscow regional legislation amended, and financial support for orphaned children living in hospitals was included in the regional budget. The movement has since developed into a foundation, which addresses all issues relating to “social orphanhood” (child abandonment) in Russia. Today the foundation works in three main areas – preventing social orphanhood, supporting children in large children’s institutions and promoting the placement of orphaned children in family homes.
