Natalia Vodianova leads round table event on the popularity of myths surrounding developmental disabilities

On 4 October 2017, a round table event was held alongside the main programme of the sixth international Every Child Deserves a Family forum, with the participation of top media executives, representatives of NGOs and parents’ associations and Naked Heart founder Natalia Vodianova.

In addition to Natalia Vodianova, various editors, news correspondents and TV presenters took part in the round table discussion, as well as Naked Heart experts Svyatoslav Dovbnya and Tatiana Morozova, representative of the Tula Department of Health Valentina Zherebtsova, and mother of a child with disabilities Mila Kirillova. The discussion was moderated by Marianna Maksimovskaya.

During the discussion the participants tried to establish who was responsible for disseminating pseudoscientific theories about working with people with disabilities and propagating myths about special needs and ways to address the situation. They also discussed the need to support non-profit organisations and parents’ associations in covering that topic in the mass media.

The round table event took place in parallel to the main programme of the Every Child Deserves a Family forum, which has been organised on an annual basis by the Naked Heart Foundation since 2012. The forum is a unique platform for communication and exchange of experience, not only between Russian and international specialists, but also with representatives of parents’ organisations and foreign experts with international experience in working with children and young people with special needs. The forum gives participants the opportunity to regularly find out about the work of their Russian and foreign colleagues and facilitates the creation of a professional community in Russia.
